La vera storia dello stuzzicadenti

Henry Petroski, autore di The Toothpick: Technology and Culture, ha scritto per Slate una breve storia dello stuzzicadenti. Si parla delle suore portoghesi che l’hanno inventato, di come, a un certo punto, masticarlo in pubblico sia diventato uno status symbol, di quanto sia pericoloso quello del Martini cocktail e di Charles Forster, l’uomo che riuscì a farne un mercato fregando tutti.

The Yankee tradition was to whittle a toothpick on demand. It did not make sense to spend money on something one could make for oneself, let alone for something that would be used once and then discarded. But Forster came up with ingenious marketing schemes.
